IYB (pronounced “ee-bee”) is an art project led by Yoshiro Benjamin Iida, dedicated to revealing the inherent beauty and value of natural wood and reclaimed timber. Based at a workshop in Minamiboso, Chiba, IYB explores a wide range of creative possibilities—from tables and benches that preserve the organic forms of trees to experiments with new materials and methods.
We begin with architecture and spaces that draw fully on the power of natural wood. The Kids’ Land at FUJI ROCK is one of them. We build slides from natural timber and breathe new life into fallen trees, and we keep extending our work with single-slab furniture, spaces and artworks.
We believe that trees carry a unique energy. Simply touching natural wood can have a calming effect, and at times, it can even give us a sense of vitality. Nature is essential to a child’s development, and we want to create more environments shaped by organic, living materials rather than artificial ones.
Our base is in Minamiboso, Chiba. We have transformed a former cowshed in Kamogawa into our workshop and creative base. It also serves as a warehouse where we source and store single-slab timber and reclaimed wood. Surrounded by farmland and forests, it provides an ideal environment for making and experimentation.
IYB is both a creative project and an initiative dedicated to cultivating the next generation of makers. In an age increasingly shaped by AI, we believe the value of people who make things with their own hands—in the physical, tangible world—will only continue to grow. Yet in reality, an aging workforce means that skilled makers are becoming fewer and fewer. IYB is committed to changing this by creating an environment where people can work while learning the craft of making.

Single-slab tables and counters for SHIP, a community space in Minamibōsō. The live edges are left as they are, so every seat at the shared kitchen gets a different edge.

A whole tree carried into a Tokyo office as it was. Dried plants hang from its branches to form a canopy over the long table where the company meets, and plants still grow in the hollows of the trunk.
